The meaning
What Safa and Marwah means in Islam
The Qur'an names them among the symbols of Allah. Hajar crossed the ground between them seven times searching for water for Isma'il, and pilgrims repeat her crossing in the rite called sa'i. Both hills are now inside the Sacred Mosque, in a long marble gallery called the mas'a, and only the bare rock at each end still shows. It is a mother's desperate search preserved as an act of worship.
