What Umrah means in Islam

It shares its rites with hajj but has no Arafah, no Mina and no fixed date. It takes a few hours rather than several days. Shafi'is and Hanbalis hold umrah obligatory once in a lifetime; Hanafis and Malikis call it a confirmed sunnah. Performing it in Ramadan is described in a well known hadith as equal in reward to a hajj, which does not remove the obligation of hajj itself.
