The meaning

What Masjid al-Haram means in Islam

Haram here means set apart and protected, not forbidden in the sense of sinful. It is the oldest of the three mosques a Muslim may set out on a journey to visit, and the Qur'an makes it the direction of prayer for everyone, wherever they are. A prayer offered in it is reported to be worth many times a prayer elsewhere. The open marble floor around the Ka'bah, where tawaf is made, is called the mataf.
