The meaning
What Hajj means in Islam
It is the fifth pillar. The condition of ability, called istita'ah, covers health, safe passage and the money to travel and to leave dependants provided for; someone who lacks these owes nothing. The rites run over several days across Makkah, Mina, Arafah and Muzdalifah, retracing the acts of Ibrahim, Hajar and Isma'il. Umrah can be done at any time of year, but hajj cannot.
