What Battle of Mu'tah means in Islam
The Prophet named Zayd ibn Harithah to lead, then Ja'far ibn Abi Talib if Zayd fell, then Abdullah ibn Rawahah if Ja'far fell. All three were killed. Khalid ibn al-Walid, newly Muslim, took up the banner and extracted the army intact, and the Prophet called him a sword among the swords of Allah. He is reported to have described the deaths to the Companions in Madinah while the battle was still being fought far away. He did not go himself, so by the strict usage it is a sariyyah rather than a ghazwah.
