The meaning
What Uhud means in Islam
The Prophet posted archers on a hill and told them not to leave it whatever happened. When Quraysh broke and the Muslims began collecting spoils, most of the archers came down, and Khalid ibn al-Walid's cavalry came round the open flank. Around seventy Companions were killed, including Hamzah, and the Prophet himself was wounded. Surah Al Imran discusses the day at length, without softening it, which is part of why the Qur'an's honesty about its own community is striking.
