The meaning

What Madinah means in Islam

It was called Yathrib before he came; Madinat an-Nabi, the city of the Prophet, shortened to al-Madinah, the City. Its two Arab tribes, Aws and Khazraj, had been at war for generations and were reconciled by Islam. He declared it a sanctuary as Ibrahim had declared Makkah one, prayed for its measures to be blessed, and said that its hardship sifts people the way a furnace clears iron of impurity.
