The meaning

What Makkah means in Islam

The Qur'an also calls it Bakkah, and Umm al-Qura, the mother of settlements. Ibrahim left Hajar and Isma'il in it when it had no water and no people, and prayed that hearts would incline towards it. It is a haram, a sanctuary in which fighting, hunting and cutting the trees are forbidden. Most schools bar non Muslims from its precinct, the Hanafis being the exception, and the law in force there keeps them out of the city altogether. The Prophet lived there fifty three years before the Hijrah.
