The meaning

What Banu Umayyah means in Islam

It began with Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, a Companion and scribe of revelation, and turned the caliphate into an inherited office. Under them the state reached Spain in the west and the Indus in the east, Arabic became the language of administration, coinage was reformed, and the Dome of the Rock was built. Muslim assessment of them is mixed and always has been. Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, the exception nearly everyone praises, came from this family.
