The meaning
What Hijr Isma'il means in Islam
When Quraysh rebuilt the Ka'bah they ran short of lawful money and left this stretch outside the walls. The Prophet told Aishah that if her people were not so new to Islam he would rebuild it on Ibrahim's foundation and bring the Hijr back inside. So praying in it counts as praying inside the Ka'bah, and this is also why tawaf must be made outside the wall, not between it and the building.
