The meaning
What Uthman ibn Affan means in Islam
The title means possessor of two lights, because he married two of the Prophet's daughters in turn. He was wealthy and gave heavily: he bought the well of Rumah for the people of Madinah and equipped much of the army of Tabuk. His great act as caliph was to standardise the mushaf, sending official copies to the provinces when he saw reciters disputing over readings. Rebels besieged his house and killed him while he was reading the Qur'an; he refused to let anyone fight for him.
