The meaning
What Jam' al-Qur'an means in Islam
It was already written in the Prophet's lifetime on parchment, palm stalks and bone, and memorised by many Companions. After heavy losses among the reciters at the battle of Yamamah, Abu Bakr had Zayd ibn Thabit gather it into one set of sheets, which were later kept by Hafsah. Uthman then had standard copies made from those sheets and sent to the main cities, so that the whole community read from one text.
