The meaning
What Rasm Uthmani means in Islam
The original copies carried no dots and no vowel marks, only the consonantal skeleton, which could hold more than one authentic reading at once. Later scholars added dots, vowels and stop marks without touching that skeleton. This is why some words are written in the mushaf differently from how they are written today, and why Uthmani and simplified Indo-Pak printings look unlike each other on the page.
