The meaning

What Kaffarah means in Islam

For deliberately breaking a Ramadan fast, the expiation is to fast sixty consecutive days, or if unable, to feed sixty poor people, alongside making up the day. Hanafis and Malikis apply this to deliberate eating and drinking as well as intercourse; Shafi'is and Hanbalis restrict it to intercourse. A separate and much lighter kaffarah exists for breaking an oath. It is not owed by someone who broke the fast by mistake or out of genuine need.
