The meaning
What Tahajjud means in Islam
The root means to give up sleep. The Qur'an addresses the Prophet directly about it, and the last third of the night is its best time. There is no fixed number of rak'ahs; two is enough. Qiyam al-layl is a broader term for any prayer of the night, and in ordinary use the two words are treated as the same thing.
