The meaning

What Ummah means in Islam

The root is umm, mother, so an ummah is a people gathered around one origin. The Qur'an calls this community a middle nation and says your ummah is one ummah, and it uses the same word for other nations, for a stretch of time, and once for Ibrahim alone, a single man called a whole community. In practice the word carries a duty: what happens to Muslims elsewhere is not other people's news.
