The meaning

What Tarawih means in Islam

The name comes from the pauses for rest taken after every four rak'ahs. The number differs by custom and school: twenty rak'ahs became the settled practice of most schools and thirty six the old practice of Madinah, while many mosques pray eight, following reports of the Prophet's own night prayer. The number is not the point of the argument it is often made into; both are within the tradition.
