The meaning
What Hawl means in Islam
You set a date, usually a day in Ramadan for ease of memory, and pay on whatever qualifying wealth you hold on that date each year. Hanafis fold money that comes and goes during the year into that one date; the other schools start a fresh year for wealth newly acquired. Crops are the exception: their zakat is due at harvest, and buried treasure is due at once.
