The meaning
What Salat al-Janazah means in Islam
It consists of four takbirs said while standing: al-Fatihah in the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools and praise of Allah in the Hanafi and Maliki, then salawat on the Prophet, then supplication for the deceased, then the closing salam. It is a communal obligation, meaning that if enough people pray it the duty is lifted from the rest. It is a prayer for the dead person, not a ceremony for the family, which is why it is kept short.
