The meaning
What Jannat al-Baqi means in Islam
The full name, Baqi al-Gharqad, refers to a thorn tree that once grew there. Uthman, Fatimah, Hasan ibn Ali, Aishah, Abbas and thousands of Companions lie in it. The Prophet used to visit at night and greet its people. Its graves are left level and unmarked, on his instruction that graves be kept low and not built over. The domes that later centuries raised over them were demolished in 1926, a decision Muslims still argue over, so visitors find open ground rather than monuments.
