The meaning

What Kalam Allah means in Islam

The Qur'an is the speech of Allah, and the question the third century argued over was whether that speech is created like everything else or an eternal attribute of the One who speaks. The Mu'tazila held it created; Ahmad ibn Hanbal was imprisoned and beaten under the mihna for refusing to say so, and the position that prevailed in Sunni Islam is that the Qur'an is the uncreated speech of Allah, though the schools word the relation between the eternal attribute and the recited letters differently. It is the clearest case in the tradition of a doctrine settled by somebody's endurance rather than by an argument.
