The meaning
What Hifz means in Islam
The word means preservation, the same word the Qur'an uses when it says Allah has taken the preservation of this revelation upon Himself. Memorisation has been the main way that happened: in every generation enough people carried the whole text that no copy could quietly go missing. A memoriser adds a small portion each day and spends far more time revising than adding.
