The meaning

What Hasad means in Islam

The Qur'an teaches seeking refuge from the evil of an envier when he envies (Qur'an 113:5). Scholars separate blameworthy hasad, which wants the gift removed, from ghibtah, which wants the same gift without wanting anyone stripped of theirs; the second is permitted and even praised. Envy arrives without permission. What is judged is whether a person acts on it or feeds it.
