The meaning

What Ummahat al-Mu'minin means in Islam

Surah al-Ahzab says his wives are their mothers, and in the same surah forbids anyone to marry them after him. He was married to eleven women across his life, nine of whom survived him; for twenty five years, until he was fifty, he was married to Khadijah alone. Several were widows, and the marriages knitted together tribes that had been enemies. Aishah and Umm Salamah in particular transmitted a large part of what is known about his private practice.
