The meaning
What Tawadu' means in Islam
The Prophet peace be upon him said nobody humbles himself for Allah except that Allah raises him, in Muslim, and the Qur'an describes the servants of the Most Merciful as those who walk on the earth gently (Qur'an 25:63). Scholars define it as accepting the truth from whoever brings it, and not seeing yourself as above anyone. Performed modesty, staged so that people will admire it, belongs with riya rather than with tawadu'.
