The meaning
What Haya' means in Islam
The Prophet peace be upon him said modesty is a branch of faith, in Bukhari and Muslim, and that modesty brings nothing but good, in Muslim. It is a restraint that works before the act rather than a regret afterwards. It is not shyness of speech: a person can be modest and still ask a direct question, and the women of the Ansar were praised because shyness did not stop them learning their religion.
