The meaning
What Sabr means in Islam
The root means to restrain or to confine. Scholars usually give it three fields: steadiness in obeying Allah, steadiness in staying away from what He forbade, and steadiness under what He decrees. The Qur'an pairs it with prayer as the two things to seek help by (Qur'an 2:153). It does not mean feeling nothing: the Prophet peace be upon him wept when his son died and said the eye weeps and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord, in Bukhari.
