The meaning
What Ruqya means in Islam
The Qur'an calls itself a healing for what is in the chests (Qur'an 10:57). The Prophet peace be upon him permitted ruqya so long as it contains no shirk, in Muslim, and approved a Companion who recited al-Fatihah over a man who had been stung, in Bukhari and Muslim. Anyone may recite over themselves or their family; no special person is required. Large fees, secret formulas, unintelligible words, and requests for the patient's mother's name are all signs to walk away.
