The meaning
What Qur'an means in Islam
The word means the recitation, from a root meaning to read aloud. It is one book of 114 surahs, revealed piece by piece between Makkah and Madinah, memorised by the Companions and written down in the Prophet's lifetime. Muslims hold that the Arabic wording is itself the revelation, which is why any rendering into another language is called a translation of the meaning and never the Qur'an.
