The meaning

What Nuzul al-Qur'an means in Islam

The first revelation was Iqra, in the cave of Hira, and the last verses came near the end of the Prophet's life. The Qur'an explains its own slow pace: it came in stages to steady the Prophet's heart. A well known report from Ibn Abbas adds an earlier stage, the whole Qur'an brought down to the lowest heaven on Laylat al-Qadr and then released piece by piece.
