The meaning
What Israiliyyat means in Islam
The Qur'an tells its stories for their lesson, so names, dates and numbers are often absent, and early commentators sometimes reached for Jewish and Christian material to fill the gaps. The rule scholars settled on has three parts: accept what our own sources confirm, reject what they contradict, and neither affirm nor deny the rest. A good deal of what people repeat as Qur'anic detail is actually israiliyyat.
