The meaning
What Surah means in Islam
Each surah has a name, usually taken from a striking word inside it, and every surah except at-Tawbah opens with the basmalah. They range from al-Baqarah at 286 verses down to al-Kawthar at three. The order in the mushaf is not the order of revelation, so many of the short surahs at the end are among the earliest to come down.
