The meaning
What Ayah means in Islam
The same word is used for the signs of Allah in creation, which is why a verse is called a sign rather than a line. Most scholars hold that verse endings were fixed by the Prophet's own recitation; the numbers printed in the margins were added later as an aid. The Hafs printing counts 6,236 verses, and other counting traditions divide a few verses differently and reach slightly different totals.
