The meaning

What Qari means in Islam

The plural is qurra, and in the earliest generations it meant the scholars who carried the Qur'an rather than performers. A muqri is a qari licensed to teach and to grant ijazah. Today the word is used loosely for anyone who recites beautifully, which is harmless, but the older meaning is worth keeping in view.
