The meaning

What Ijazah (in recitation) means in Islam

The teacher listens to every letter, corrects it, and only then names the student in an unbroken chain of teachers reaching back to the Prophet. It certifies that you were heard, not that you passed a written exam. Most ijazahs given today are in Hafs from Asim, though teachers of the other readings still grant them.
