The meaning

What Muwatta means in Islam

The name suggests something made smooth, or well trodden. It is the earliest of these books to survive in wide use, and it is a law book as much as a hadith book: Malik records a report, then how the people of Madinah actually acted. Al-Shafi'i is quoted as calling it the soundest book on earth after the Book of Allah, a judgement made before the two Sahihs were compiled.
