The meaning
What Musannaf means in Islam
The two great examples are the Musannaf of Abd al-Razzaq al-San'ani and that of Ibn Abi Shayba. They are enormous, and they are the main window onto what the earliest generations actually practised. Unlike a musnad, arranged by narrator, a musannaf is arranged by subject.
