The meaning
What Jami' means in Islam
The word means gatherer. Sahih al-Bukhari and Jami' al-Tirmidhi are both jami' works. Al-Tirmidhi's is unusual in that he comments on nearly every hadith, names who else narrated it, and records which scholars acted on it, which makes it a teaching book as much as a collection.
