The meaning
What Sahih al-Bukhari means in Islam
Its full title describes it as a sifted, connected, authentic collection. Al-Bukhari arranged it by chapter, and his chapter headings carry his own legal conclusions, so the book argues as well as reports. He required proof that a narrator actually met the person he quotes, a stricter rule than Muslim's. Reports repeat across chapters because he cites one hadith in several places for several points, which is why the raw entry count is far larger than the number of distinct hadiths.
