The meaning
What Lawh Mahfuz means in Islam
The Qur'an closes Surah al-Buruj by calling it a glorious Qur'an in a Preserved Tablet (Qur'an 85:21-22), and speaks elsewhere of the Mother of the Book (Qur'an 43:4). It is the writing stage of the decree: what is in it does not change, and what a person can still change is himself. Its reality belongs to the unseen, so speculation about its material or its size is empty.
