What Iman means in Islam

The six articles come from the hadith of Jibril in Sahih Muslim, where the angel asks the Prophet peace be upon him what faith is and then confirms his answer. Iman is more than agreement in the mind; the texts tie it to the tongue and to the limbs as well. Most Sunni scholars hold that iman increases and decreases, while the Hanafi and Maturidi tradition holds that its essence stays fixed even as its light grows.
