The meaning

What Shirk means in Islam

The word means to make a partner or to share. The Qur'an says Allah does not forgive that a partner be set up with Him, and forgives what is less than that for whom He wills (Qur'an 4:48). Commentators read that of the one who dies without repenting, since the Qur'an elsewhere promises forgiveness to whoever turns back. Scholars distinguish major shirk, which takes a person outside Islam, from minor shirk, which is a grave sin but does not.
