The meaning
What Ashura means in Islam
Arriving in Madinah he found the Jews fasting it and said that he had more right to Musa than they did. Fasting it is recommended and is reported to expiate the previous year; he intended to add the ninth as well, so most fast both. It is also the day Husayn was killed at Karbala in the sixty first year. Sunnis do not treat it as a day of mourning ritual, while Twelver Shia observe it as the central commemoration of that loss.
