Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas

The Prophet ﷺ ransomed his parents for him at Uhud; Persia fell to his command at Qadisiyyah.

The account

Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas believed at seventeen, third or fourth of all mankind, and shot the first arrow ever loosed in defense of this religion. His mother swore hunger to death to break his faith; he answered that were she to die a hundred deaths he would not leave it, and revelation enshrined the balance: obey parents in everything except shirk (31:15). At Uhud the Prophet ﷺ emptied his quiver for him with the words no other companion received: "Shoot, may my father and mother be ransomed for you."

The Prophet prayed: "O Allah, make his aim true and answer his supplication," and the ummah learned to fear Sa'd's du'a like a weapon. Under Umar he commanded al-Qadisiyyah, the battle that broke the Sassanid empire, and founded Kufa. One of the ten promised Paradise and of the six of the shura, he withdrew from the fitnah entirely, saying: bring me a sword that knows the believer from the disbeliever. He was the last of the ten to die, on his farm outside Madinah, in the woolen cloak he had worn at Badr, kept for his shroud.
