The account

Firstborn of Ali and Fatimah, named by the Prophet ﷺ himself, al-Hasan rode his grandfather's back in sujud and his shoulder in the streets, and carried his face: the most resembling of the household. From the minbar the Prophet issued the prophecy that became this man's biography: "This son of mine is a sayyid, and perhaps Allah will reconcile through him two great parties of the Muslims."

Forty years later he held the caliphate of Iraq with an army at his back and every incentive of blood and title to use it. He weighed the ummah against the throne and handed power to Mu'awiyah on terms, in the Year of the Jamaa, retiring to Madinah as the man who proved the Prophet's word by giving up what men kill for. With his brother al-Husayn he holds the shared title: the two masters of the youth of the people of Jannah. He was generous past accounting, twice splitting his entire wealth with the poor, and died in Madinah, asking burial beside his grandfather if it caused no conflict, and al-Baqi when it would have: peacemaking even in the grave.
