Companions · The beloved, son of the beloved
أسامة بن زيد
Usama ibn Zayd
Commander at eighteen over the elders of Badr; the Prophet's ﷺ last army marched under him.
The account
Son of Zayd and of Umm Ayman the Prophet's ﷺ nurse, Usama grew up on the Prophet's knee, paired there with al-Hasan: "O Allah, love them both, for I love them." Makkah's measure of him is the intercession story: when a noblewoman's theft case sought a favorite to soften the law, they chose Usama, the beloved, son of the beloved, and his request drew the Prophet's most famous statement of equality: peoples before you were destroyed because they excused the noble and punished the weak; by Allah, if Fatimah the daughter of Muhammad stole, I would cut off her hand.
In his final days the Prophet ﷺ tied the banner of the Sham expedition for Usama, eighteen years old, with Umar in his ranks; the murmurs about his youth were answered from the minbar: he is worthy of command, as his father was. Abu Bakr's first act as caliph was to dispatch that army unchanged, walking beside the mounted teenager he refused to outrank. Usama had one scar he carried from a battlefield misjudgment, a shahadah spoken under his raised sword that he did not accept as sincere; the Prophet's rebuke, did you split open his heart, made Usama wish he had entered Islam only that day, and fixed forever how this ummah receives the professed word of faith.
