Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah

“Every nation has its trustworthy one, and ours is Abu Ubaydah.”

The account

Early convert, emigrant to both hijrahs, veteran of Badr and every field after, at Uhud he drew the two helmet-rings from the Prophet's ﷺ cheek with his front teeth, losing them and gaining the most honorable gap in history. The Prophet fixed his title in the Sahihayn: "Every nation has its amin, and the amin of this ummah is Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah," and sent him when Najran asked for "a trustworthy man, truly trustworthy." One of the ten promised Paradise; commander of the armies of Sham; and when the plague of Amwas took its toll, he refused to flee his post: "shall we flee from the decree of Allah? To the decree of Allah", and was buried with his soldiers.
