Refused half a fortune as a gift: “show me the market”, and gave caravans away.
The account
Paired at the mu'akhah with Sa'd ibn ar-Rabi', who offered him half of everything; his answer founded Muslim commercial ethics: "May Allah bless your family and wealth for you, show me the market." From a borrowed nothing he rebuilt a fortune, then spent it in convoys: seven hundred camels' cargo given in a day. One of the ten promised Paradise, one of the six of Umar's shura, and the man behind whom the Prophet ﷺ himself prayed a raka'ah at Tabuk, the only such honor. He wept over abundance: "Mus'ab was better than me and was shrouded in one cloak… I fear our reward was hastened to us here." Wealth in his hand, never in his heart.
