Ramadan · a Light
Aisha asked what to say if she found the night
Aisha asked the Prophet ﷺ what she should say if she knew which night was Laylat al-Qadr. She was not told to ask for anything material. The words he gave her ask for pardon: O Allah, You are the one who pardons and You love to pardon, so pardon me. The Arabic verb is afw, which carries the sense of erasing a thing rather than overlooking it while still remembering it. On the night the Qur'an calls better than a thousand months, the request recommended to her was that a record be wiped. The report is in the collections of Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah, and Tirmidhi himself graded it hasan sahih.
