Leaving food is not wanted if false speech stays

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever does not give up false speech and acting on it, Allah has no need of his leaving his food and drink. The sentence is blunt about what the fast is for. Going without water in a hot country is hard enough to feel like an achievement in itself, and the report refuses to accept it as one. In another narration he told a fasting person who is insulted or dragged into an argument to say, twice, that he is fasting, and to leave it there. The same reports describe Ramadan as a month of restraint in speech and temper, with the hunger as its most visible and least important part.
